✈ Ethiopian Airlines — A Real History of African Aviation

Ethiopian Airlines (ET) is Africa's largest and most profitable airline, wholly owned by the Ethiopian government. Founded in 1945, it has grown from five surplus propeller aircraft to a modern fleet of 170+ jets serving 161 destinations on every continent.

1945 — Foundation
Emperor Haile Selassie I signs a partnership with TWA (Trans World Airlines) on 8 September. Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL) is officially incorporated on 21 December with an initial capital of ETB 2.5 million.
1946 — First flight
Operations commence on 8 April 1946 with a weekly Addis Ababa–Cairo service using five war-surplus Douglas C-47 Skytrains.
1951 — International expansion
Two Convair CV-240s join the fleet, enabling the first true international scheduled services to Nairobi, Khartoum and Beirut.
1956 — Piston era peak
Douglas DC-6s enter service, extending range to Europe. Frankfurt becomes ET's first European destination in 1958.
1962 — Jet age begins
Two Boeing 720Bs arrive in December. The first jet service (ADD–NBO) operates on 8 January 1963.
1965 — Africanisation
EAL becomes a share company and renames itself Ethiopian Airlines. By its 25th anniversary in 1971, all positions are held by Ethiopian nationals — the TWA era ends.
1997–1998 — Transatlantic
Boeing 767-300ERs enable transatlantic routes. Washington Dulles (IAD) launches in 1998 — ET's first North American destination.
2011 — Star Alliance
Ethiopian Airlines joins Star Alliance in December — the first sub-Saharan African airline to join a major global alliance.
2012 — Boeing 787 Dreamliner
ET becomes the first African airline to operate the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner — a landmark for African aviation.
2016 — First A350 in Africa
Ethiopian Airlines becomes the first African carrier to operate the Airbus A350-900.
2019 — ET 302 tragedy
On 10 March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 (Boeing 737 MAX 8) crashes shortly after take-off from HAAB, killing all 157 on board, triggering the worldwide 737 MAX grounding.
2023–2026 — Africa's #1
Ethiopian Airlines consolidates its position as Africa's largest airline: revenue USD 7.6 billion (FY2025), 161 passenger routes, fleet of 170 aircraft.
🏆 Ethiopian Airlines holds the title of Africa's Best Airline and is a Star Alliance member. Its hub HAAB is Africa's busiest international airport.

📋 Flight Preparation & Dispatch

A complete pre-flight preparation is the foundation of every successful vETH flight.

  • Read the METAR and TAF for departure and destination airports
  • Generate your OFP on SimBrief with the correct aircraft type
  • Book the flight on VAMSYS before starting your simulator
  • Program the FMS with the route and verify fuel
  • Check NOTAMs for any active restrictions on your route

🖥️ Connecting to VATSIM & IVAO

VATSIM and IVAO are the two major online flight simulation networks where you fly with real virtual ATC controllers and other pilots worldwide.

Connecting to VATSIM:

  1. Create a free account at vatsim.net
  2. Download a pilot client: vPilot (MSFS/P3D) or Swift (X-Plane)
  3. Complete the VATSIM P0 (pilot) rating — basic online quiz
  4. Connect the client to your simulator and set your callsign (e.g. ETH1234)
  5. File a flight plan on VATSIM before connecting

Connecting to IVAO:

  1. Create a free account at ivao.aero
  2. Download IvAp or Altitude pilot client
  3. Complete the IVAO Basic Pilot Training (BPT) online course
  4. Set callsign: ETH + flight number (e.g. ETH637)

✈ Boeing 737-200 — The Pioneer

The Boeing 737-200 was Ethiopian Airlines' workhorse from the early 1970s through the late 1990s, serving domestic Ethiopian routes and short East African hops. It represents ET's first narrow-body jet era.

Engines2× Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A — 14,500 lbf
Passengers~115 all-Economy or ~100 mixed config
Range3,520 km (1,900 nm)
Cruise speedMach 0.74 (~795 km/h)
Max FLFL370
In ET service~1971 to late 1990s

Key characteristics:

  • Fully analogue cockpit — steam gauge instruments, no glass displays
  • JT8D engines mounted very low, close to the ground — no winglets
  • No FADEC — full manual throttle management throughout all flight phases
  • No autothrottle on early variants — pilot manages power manually
  • Used on domestic routes: ADD–DIR, ADD–JIM, ADD–GDQ, ADD–MQX
  • Optional gravel kit — the 737-200 could operate from unpaved airstrips
✈ The 737-200 is a vintage type rating at vETH. Flying it honours Ethiopian Airlines' pioneering role in domestic African regional aviation.
